Summer has arrived and we have been working hard to finalize the preliminary design of Whio II.

As you can see, the team at LOMOcean have chosen a catamaran with a length of 18 meters. Whio II is designed so that all the sailing systems can be operated from inside, and all the sailing and sailing trim can be done with minimal rope-handling. The rig is a powerful aerodynamic design which is fundamental as it will serve as our main source of energy. In addition, she has over 6 kilowatts of solar panels on the cabin top. Under the floor, the cabin has space for as many batteries as we could wish for. The process now is to calculate exactly how many batteries we’re going to need to truly achieve unlimited range.

Preliminary Design

At the back there are two additional helms and we envisage this will be used in the ‘supercharging mode’ with excellent views to the rig, full sailing trim control, and the feeling of sailing a racing boat; with the CMG display calculating your performance as you cruise.

Whio II features two front sails which will attach to the rail just in front of the mast. This allows tacking without any adjustment! The front sail will be a large ‘code zero’ for light wind conditions.

You will also notice the ultra clean design because you’re not expected to go outside in any conditions, so it’s not really necessary to have protection around the front of the boat for falling overboard. However, walking around the boat at anchor is completely safe because you are inside solid bulwarks. Additionally you’ll notice the large sugar scoops at the rear with a full-height door leading to a garage for all the toys, bikes, and other things. This design suits larger overtaking waves but also makes it easy to load from the garage to the tender. Remember, this boat is not really designed to tie up in a marina but ‘anchor out’, and this will be the main way you get on/off the boat to the shore via tender.

The team here are very excited and looking forward to working on this design and finalizing details to make Whio II the ultimate zero-emissions global explorer. It’s amazing to be able to present this preliminary design to you now!

    2 things,

    I caution making this assumption, humans tend to love to be outside and will display all kinds of human behaviors including risk taking.

    2 Get an engineer to estimate your Kw requirements, they love math.

    • Luckily we have some brilliant engineers working on exactly that. Whio II intends to champion a new way of generating electricity as you sail, so energy calculation is at the very core of the entire project, as well as this vessel.

      And we absolutely agree with that remark! However, being able to control the sailing of the vessel from inside, this leaves the front to be used more as a recreational space, primarily at anchor, which has been the designers’ approach to this design.

  2. I have lived off grid for over 25 years and own a solar energy company that builds off-grid systems, grid tied systems and many hybrid systems.

    To achieve full unlimited range you will need a generator for recharging your batteries. There will be days without any sun and also days without any wind…..think of foggy weather in the Northeast! If you were to use a Victron inverter/charger you could probably get by with a gen set as small as 5kW. Depending on the amount of batteries, voltage and amperage. Again its a mathematical equation that not not hard to figure out

    • In contrast to what is currently the status quo, we’ve got a fundamentally different approach to utilizing what energy is available around us. By using propeller-regeneration in synchrony with the CMG route-calculation and additional solar, we are getting rid of onboard fuel systems all together to make a truly unlimited range electric sailing vessel.

      We’ve set some very challenging theoretical routes for our boat to tackle, and our estimations are looking great so far, even with some very harsh values, wind, weather, light, temperature, long showers, washing every day; pushing every aspect of living as much as we can to ensure nothing is underestimated.

    I like the concept. I am building a fully electric catamaran myself. But I will cheat and have a little Honda 2000 or so just in case. Wish I didn’t think it was necessary, and perhaps it won’t be.

    Your weather routing sounds interesting. I will be sailing on the same principals, though without the software support…

    One key to me successfully accomplishing full autonomy will be to maintain the loaded displacement below design displacement for diesel propulsion.
    To this end, I am well into construction of my 13.6m cat. It will have a light ship displacement below 4 tons. Loaded, 6 tons. I am at the fairing stage now.

    In line with keeping the boat light, consider removing material from the solid bulwark. This will also allow for easy line handling, less unwanted windage and above all, provide safety when in rough weather. Consider a wave splashing over the bow. With closed bullwarks the water will have nowhere to go but aft, into the cockpit and saloon.
    Holes at deck level will be sufficient provided they are large enough. This is how closed bullwarks are designed for the ships I work on.

    That’s a big roof! I’m jealous 😂. I will max out around 2500w before using deck space for solar. In my case, I am confident it will be sufficient. With a 30kWh bank and wind as primary propulsion.
